What can be reviewed on this site?
Several forms of media are reviewed on this site. The categories are as follows...
- Shows: Includes shows from TV, DVD, streaming, cinema, etc.
- Movies: Longer shows that are not part of a regular series.
- Series: TV shows with a season or more. No year is necessary.
- Games: Video games on a variety of gaming systems.
- Music:
- Artists: Music artists. This could be a person or a group.
- Albums: Music albums must include the album artist.
- Books: Reading material from a variety of authors.
There can be no duplicates, but there can be similar titles with a different year or gaming system. For example: a movie that came out in 1990 and 2020 can have the same name, and a game with the same title can have an entry for each gaming system.
How does it work?
Reviews: Each movie, series, game, artist, album, and book has its own entry.
Ratings: The icon on the left. This is a quick way to see what people think. It's simplified to an overall "yes" "no" or "meh." Items without enough reviews don't have an icon.
General Information: Next to the rating is the title, year, genre, and other general information.
Descriptors: These are simple words or phrases that people use to describe the item in review. These are often adjectives or quick descriptions.
Chart: Expanding a review will show its chart. Descriptors are shown in order of popularity and are a great way to get an idea of what people think about the item in review.
Comments: You may want to add a little more than the descriptors allow. We call these "One-Liners" because they're short (and usually just one sentence). You will find these below the chart of descriptors.
How do I flag wrong or inappropriate items?
You can flag an item for the site admins to review. Look at the top right of an item for a little "x" in a box. Clicking this "x" will open the flagging options. There are three places to do this...
General Information: This includes the title, genre, year, game system, album artist, etc. You can mark these as Wrong/Misspelled, Nonexistent/Fake, or Duplicate.
Descriptors: You can flag the top three descriptors that show in a review. You'll find options like Misspelled/Typo, Inappropriate/Offensive, Nonsense/Trolling, and Wrong Information.
Comments: Each comment can be flagged separately. Options include Inappropriate/Offensive Comment, Nonsense/Trolling Comment, and Wrong Information.
Flagging an item will add it to a list to be reviewed by site admins. There is no notification when an item is fixed.
What are the different sorting options?
Top Rated: This shows the highest rated items at the top. We use Laplace smoothing so a score of 1 YES doesn't beat a score of 99 YES and 1 NO.
Popular: This is the same as "Top Rated" but limited to recently added items. "Top Rated" tends to not change much over time, so with this sort you won't have to scroll through all the entries trying to guess which were added recently. Some sites call this "Hot"
Recently Added: This shows items in the order in which they were added. As the site is still growing, historic items are being added at the same rate as newer items - but eventually this will show newer items at the top.
Home Page: The home page uses a special sort across all categories that uses vote count. All votes (Good, Bad, and Meh) are equal. This allows the most reviewed items to bubble to the top. Like "Popular" this is limited to recent entries.
Other Sorts: other sort options include title, year, genre, game system, and author.
Where can I see my medals and account stats?
Click on your username in the top right to get to your account page. You'll find stats for how many reviews you've done, and you can see all of your earned medals. You can also see what medals are still available to earn.
Can I add a music album without an artist?
You must enter an artist for a music album, BUT you don't have to add the artist first. If the artist doesn't exist, it will be created automatically when the album is created. The genre(s) for the artist will be the same as the album.
How are the ratings calculated?
Ratings are displayed as a percentage. The percentage is calculated by the number of "yes" votes plus half of the number of "meh" votes over the total number of votes. For example: a review with 10 "yes" votes, 10 "meh" votes, and 10 "no" votes will have a score of 15 over 30 and displayed as 50% approval rating.
Once the approval percentage is calculated, we use it to decide which image to display.
- Scores above 66% will have the "star" image
- Scores below 33% will have the "X" image
- Scores between will have the "meh" image
- When there are fewer than 10 votes, the "question mark" image is displayed
